Legislative Update

The big story this year is, of course, the passage of the new Respiratory Care Practice Act which the Governor signed into law in August 2005.  This new Act more readily defines our scope of practice in respiratory care.  The recent TRACT outlined the highlights of the impact of this on our profession.  There were countless hours spent by several members of the ISRC Board working with the legislative body in Springfield to bring the passage of the new Act to a reality.  If you have any questions regarding how this new law affects you, please feel free to contact the ISRC via their website, www.isrc.org
There are 2 bills in Congress that deserve our attention.  H.R.964 will amend the Soc Sec Act to recognize the services of a RT under the plan of care for Medicare home health services.  S1440 will amend the Soc Sec Act to provide coverage for pulmonary and cardiac rehabilitation under Medicare.  Both of these bills were introduced this year and are currently in the Health Subcommittees of the Ways & Means Committee and Finance Committee ,respectively.  Please contact your legislators to support these important measures for Resp Care!  The Congress.org website will tell you which legislators are in these committees.
